Super Intensive Part Time ESL Courses
Upon registration, a student must complete ULC’s placement test. It is a one hour exam, with a carefully designed rubric to ensure proper diagnosis of a student’s level. Students are tested on their writing, reading, listening and speaking skills. The SUPER INTENSIVE ESL program placement test also involves a 30 minute interview with an instructor.
A session is eight weeks long. After the first 4 weeks, students will write a mid-session progress exam. This information, in addition to the student’s attendance and attitude, will be used to create comprehensive progress reports. The reports will be cumulative and can be accessed by students at any time. Students in the SUPER INTENSIVE ESL program must adhere to warnings issued in the progress reports.
At the end of the session, students must write a comprehensive level exam. The level exam is weighted as 70% of the session final score. The other 30% comprises the students’ in-session assignment scores. To advance, students must achieve a minimum average of 75%, with no less than 65% in any assessed course.
ULC expectation is that students will need one session (8 weeks) per level. A BEGINNER student, therefore, will require one year to complete ADVANCED A.
Students may also take ULC electives (Conversation/ Speaking/ Listening/ Writing/ Pronunciation/ IELTS preparation) in addition to their core classes. However, students should be cautioned not to take too heavy a course-load as the amount of homework can be overwhelming for some students.
